Traditional, magnetic, digital, or hose level? What works are the selected models the best for?

The spirit level is used in construction and finishing works mainly for the precise determination of levels and verticals. The spirit level is not only a simple tool with a scale and an air bubble. Nowadays it can be a technologically advanced digital and laser measuring device.

Traditional spirit level

A traditional spirit level consists of one, two, or in models for the most demanding professionals, even three vials with an antistatic liquid and a scale. They are located in the profile of the tool. The new vials are designed in a way that allows you to see the bubble as if in a magnifying glass. The spirit level uses the force of gravity to determine the level of the plane. The air bubble acts as an indicator.

Magnetic spirit level

A magnetic spirit level is a traditional tool, additionally equipped with a magnet located on the bottom of the profile. It makes it possible to attach a spirit level to a steel structure, which greatly facilitates measuring work when erecting fences or in welding workshops. The magnetic spirit level is also useful in plumbing and locksmith works.

A hose level in a traditional and electronic version

The traditional hose spirit level consists of two vertical pipes with water and a scale marking the height of the post, which are connected with a flexible hose that is filled with water. Measurement of heights (levels) or their differences is based on the principle of communicating vessels - if both ends of the hose are at the same height, the water level in the tubes will be the same.

However, this type of spirit level is not a convenient measuring device and is not accurate. Two people are required to perform the measurements. The situation is different with an electronic tube level, powered by a battery (AA 1.5v). The electronic spirit level is also equipped with a flexible hose filled not with water, but with thick silicone fluid, and an electronic sensor with a display. At one end of the hose, there is a sensor that shows the difference in measured heights. The differences in levels are given on the basis of the pressure difference in the main container (drum) and at the electronic reader. This type of spirit level is used to measure height/level differences between rooms. The accuracy of the measurements is ± 2 mm on average. The measuring range depends on the length of the hose and can even reach several dozen meters.

Advantages of the electronic tube level:

  • ease of use (measurement can be performed by one person),
  • possibility of measuring in rooms divided by walls,
  • legible, digital measurement result,
  • large working range.

Disadvantages of the tube level:

  • loses accuracy when increasing the length of the stretched hose,
  • sensitivity to temperature changes,
  • it is not possible to work in temperatures below 0 ° C.

REMEMBER

It is important that the spirit level has a solid structure, resistant to mechanical damage. The length of the spirit level is selected depending on the type of work to be performed. There are levels of various lengths available on the market: from mini-vials with a length of several cm, or even pocket versions, to those with a length of 250 cm.

Digital spirit level

The electronic spirit level is an accurate and versatile device. The spirit level is equipped with a digital angle measurement module. It also has a display - backlit in some models. When the selected angle is reached, an acoustic signal can be heard, so you do not have to stare at the display. The device can also be equipped with magnets enabling a stable attachment to the surface.

Other practical functions of the digital spirit level are:

  • the ability to save measurement results,
  • operating in various units,
  • slope correction on uneven ground.

Laser level, cross-line laser

There are many types of laser vials on the market that are powered by a rechargeable (lithium-ion) battery or standard alkaline batteries. They are handy, compact devices. They differ in the laser class, degree of advancement, range (even up to several dozen meters), degree of accuracy (+/- 0.3 mm / m - +/- 0.8 mm / m). Marking out levels, plumb lines, points, and angles is done with the help of light lines or points.

Models are available that generate up to several light lines (360º). In the case of multi-beam cross-line lasers, individual beams are switched on and off individually or simultaneously, most often also with the possibility of being operated via a smartphone. You can also use the application to control the lines without contact. Some models are equipped with tilting and locking functions at the selected point of the laser line, as well as sensors that monitor factors influencing the calibration, such as shock.
